Spur Deluxe Frequently Asked Questions

Deluxe with TCP/IP / LPD / FTP  Input Module

The SB/2K TCP/IP Input Module Supplement is an excellent guide for installing and configuring the TCP/IP Input Module.  Follow this manual closely, checking off each step and you should do well.

The most common issues occur at time of installation.  This is a list of the most common errors:

TCP/IP Communications:

1)  If you can not ping the Deluxe check the following:
Router table(s) have not been updated and does not allow new IP address to pass.
IP Address is already in use.  Power the Deluxe off and see if you get a PING response to the IP Address.
Check the hub or switch and make sure you have a good connection.
Make sure the system you are trying to PING from is on the same subnet (this can save a lot of wasted time).
NOTE: To check the TCP/IP settings, exit to DOS and go to the “C:\Pathways” directory. Type PWSETUP then, go to the “Site Parameters” tab and finally down to View Site Parameters.  To change the current IP settings, go to down to “Modify Site Parameters”.  When finished exit then reboot the Deluxe PC and try to ping again.

Printer communication and QMF configuration issues:

When going from Spur Main-menu into Print mode I see an error
     “Trouble Initializing Output 1"
Output Device configuration
    Device Type:  IBM3211.DLL
    Device Driver: Channel.DLL
    Device Parameters: 0X0F
    * Note the 0 are zeros and not the letter O.
1)  Power the Channel Printer, Spur Deluxe PC and finally unplug the power cord located on the rear of the Spur Channel Adapter for 10 seconds then restore power. Reboot The Spur PC then power the Channel printer back on. The Channel attached printers BOOT KEY will not resolve channel related issues, most printers must be powered off to reset their Channel interface boards.
2)  The cables are both either in backwards or one of the cables is in backwards or the Bus output on the Spur is connected to the Tag input on the printer.
The bus and tag cables are directional.  The ends of the cables determine the direction based on their colors.  The end which has the darkest gray should be connected to the Deluxe.
Bent pin(s) on the bus and tag cables or terminators. Remove and check all channel interface ports for bent pins. Even if the equipment has been functioning properly for an extended period, a bent pin can cause a failure at any time either during the install or after years of being installed.
3)  The Parallel Port (LPT1) is configured properly in the PC's BIOS.
Reboot the PC and go into the BIOS configuration menu.
Select Advanced, then Peripheral Configuration and you should find the LPT1 port options.
Make sure the Parallel Port (LPT1) is set for:
         Bi-Directional
         Address=378h
         IRQ=7
If there may be more then one parallel port on the back of the Spur Deluxe PC, if so, use the motherboards LPT1 port. The second parallel card was an option installed on many Deluxe PC's. Do not use this optional card!
4)  If after checking the above items the same error then try the following:
    Try a new parallel cable
Unplug and then install a set of bus and tag terminators on the Spur Channel Adapter then, reboot the PC and power-on the Channel Adapter. Go into Print Mode. If the same error appears then one of the following may be defective: Spur PC or the Channel Adapter.
5)  If the Spur PC or Channel Adapter is suspected of failing then you could try another PC.
The replacement PC must have a parallel port that supports Bi-directional mode.
The RAM and processor requirements are 16 MB and Pentium grade processor respectively.
Move the Hard disk from the Spur PC to the new PC and see if you get the same error when going into Print mode.
No errors when going from Spur's "Main-menu" into "Print <F1> menu.
1)  Make sure the printer address entered in the Configuration menu is defined correct:
NOTE: The default address used by most printer OEMs’ is “0F” (zero, not the letter O). This address should be entered in the Device Parameters section using the following syntax: 0X0F (again both are zeros).
2)  Make sure that the printer is ONLINE and STARTED.
At Spur PC power-up, if the printer is OFFLINE the Device should read:
      STARTED
If the printer has been placed ONLINE but a START command has not been issued then the following should be displayed:
      NOT READY
If the printer is ready to print the Express will display the following:
      READY
