Spur Company History
Spur Products Corporation was founded in 1972 in Santa Monica, California by Ray Lorenz and Dennis Hicks to provide IBM impact printer interfaces and controllers to users of non-IBM computers. The first connectivity product, sold in 1973, allowed an IBM Model 1403 line printer to attach and run on a Burroughs computer system.
The Universal Subsystem Adapter (USA) family of products was subsequently developed to meet the growing needs of users of high performance non-impact printers. The USA is a microprocessor controlled protocol converter that enables any computer to be connected to a variety of high-speed printers that are not natively compatible. The USA family of products was replaced by the SB/2K Express product line.
With the growth in network environments, Spur Products put its vast experience and technological knowledge to work in creating a family of products that enables users of high-speed printers to attach their equipment to virtually any network environment transparently.
In early 1991, Spur was growing rapidly and expanding beyond the capacity of their offices in El Segundo, California. The search for a new corporate headquarters, encompassing eight of the Western coastal and Rocky Mountain states, began. Spur's search for a new home ended in August of 1991 with the opening of their new facilities in Boise, Idaho. Called "Boom Town Boise" by the press, Boise has become one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S. and has for the last several years been named one of the top 10 places to live and operate a business.
