Spur Express Frequently Asked Questions

SB2K Express and Express Ethernet

The most issues occur at time of installation here is a list of common errors:

1)  The printer cables are both either in backwards or one of the cables is in backwards.
The bus and tag cables are directional.  The ends of the cables determine the direction based on their colors.  The printer cable shell which has the darkest gray should be connected to the SB2K.
2)  Make sure that the printer is ONLINE and STARTED.
If the printer is OFFLINE the SB/2K LCD display should read keep cycling the following:
      SEARCHING...
      PRINTER OFFLINE
If the printer has been placed ONLINE but a START command has not been issued then you following will be displayed:
      ERR:40000000000000
If the printer is ready to print the SB/2K Express will display the following:
      ONLINE*

SB2K Express Ethernet

If the LCD display reads ONLINE* and you are having trouble getting a LPD print job to the unit, check the following:
1)  TCP/IP LPD:
Makes sure that you are using the  TEXT_P2  as the remote queue name.  The LPD queue name is case sensitive so make sure it is spelled using uppercase.
Make sure you have the right IP address and that you can ping the unit from the system that is trying to transmit the LPD job. To check the IP address you can connect a terminal to serial port 2. The settings for this port are 9600, 8, NONE & 1 with Flow Control set to XON/XOFF.  If you can not get a response on the serial port try using a NULL MODEM cable or by swapping TRANSMIT and RECEIVE (pins 2 & 3).  If you still can not connect and are using Windows Hyper-Terminal, make sure you are set to the correct Com Port (AKA serial port).  Check the back of the PC for the number of the serial port.  Finally make sure the serial port you are using is enabled in the PC's setup utility (AKA CMOS).
 2)  Once you are connected:
Hit enter a couple time and if prompted for a user name you may enter what you wish and hit <Enter>.  When you get to the Local>  prompt type help to see the list of available commands.  To see the current IP settings type   SHOW IP  and hit <Enter>.  Next are the commands used to change the current IP settings:
    Local>  set ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Local>  set ip subnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Local> set ip router xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Note:  The above commands may vary depending on revision of firmware.
After your changes have been entered, display them one last time using the command  SHOW IP, then either type EXIT or hold down the <Ctrl> key while hitting <B> on your keyboard.  This will save your changes.   To be safe, power cycle the SB2K Leaving it off for approximately 10 seconds.  After it has been up for about 30 seconds try to ping the IP address you assigned to the unit.  If successful trying sending a print job to the IP address using the remote queue name of   TEXT_P2.
The most common issues which cause the ping command to time out are:

Router table(s) has not been updated and does not allow new SB2K IP address to pass.

IP Address is already in use.  Power the SB2K off and see if you get a response to the IP Address.

Check the hub or switch and make sure you have a good connection.

Make sure the system you are trying to ping from is on the same subnet (this can save a lot of wasted time).
